What is a mobile hotspot?
A mobile hotspot is a pocket sized device that broadcasts a Wi-Fi (internet) signal. Wi-Fi enabled devices (laptops, Chromebooks, smartphones, tablets) can connect to the hotspot's network with the network name and password. The spot has a screen which provides that information.
What is a Chromebook?
The Library's Chromebooks are similar to laptops with the main difference being that they mostly work online. If they are not connected to the internet they will have limited functionality. Chromebooks have their own operating system called Chrome, which is different from Windows or Apple operating systems. Chromebooks offer many features that you can use with a Google account.
Do I need a Google account to use the Chromebook?
A Google account is not necessary to use a Chromebook but it is recommended. Chromebooks offer guest browsing which allows users to access the internet without signing in to a Google account. Guest accounts may be limited on features. Using a Google account enhances the Chromebook experience by loading and syncing your Google profile. You can carry over your profile and settings between different devices with a Google account.
Are Google accounts free?

Who can check out a Chromebook or hotspot?
Adult library card holders who are in good standing.
How long do Chromebooks and hotspots check out for?
Both checkout for 28 days. A 14 day renewal is available as long as there are no pending holds on the Chromebooks or hotspots.
How many Chromebooks and hotspots can I check out at once?
Eligible borrowers can check out one Chromebook and one hotspot at once.
Will a Chromebook work without the hotspot?
Yes, but a Chromebook's functionality is limited without an internet connection. You can connect the Chromebook to other Wi-Fi networks like at home or in a coffee shop.
Can I connect other devices to the hotspot?
Yes, the hotspot can support up to 10 Wi-Fi enabled devices simultaneously.
How fast is the hotspot's Wi-Fi?
The hotspot provides 4G LTE data up to 150 mbps.
Is there a data limit on the hotspots?
Generally, no. The data is unlimited but the service provider my throttle speeds after 50gb of data has been reached in one cycle/month.
Where do I return the Chromebook and hotspots?
Devices should be returned to a staff member at the Circulation Desk. Make sure to return the device and accessories (case, charger, mouse) together. Please, do not return devices through the bookdrop. Doing so may damage the items and may result in fees.
Can I store files on the Chromebook?
Yes. The recommended method is on the Google Drive folder. Google Drive is a cloud storage system meaning your files will be accessible when you log in to your Google account regardless of the device you are using. It is not recommended to store files on the Chromebooks small hard drive. Any files left on the hard drive will be deleted when you remove your account to return the Chromebook. You'll want to be sure to back up those files from the hard drive to another storage device if you want to keep them.
How much does it cost?
These devices are free to borrow, however, fees will apply if they are returned late or become lost, stolen, or damaged. See the user agreement listed above.
Can you train me on how to use the Chromebook?
Staff will be able to assist with basic questions but are not available for extensive training. Each Chromebook and hotspot will come with a quick guide (see Waivers and Resources section above) to get you started. The library also offers free computer classes through the Literacy Services Dept. that you can sign up for.
Will the Chromebook and hotspot work if I travel outside the United States?
The Chromebook can work outside of the U.S. as long as it has an internet connection. The hotspot with not work outside of the U.S.
Can I reserve a Chromebook or hotspot?
Yes, you can reserve these items through the library catalog by searching for Chromebook or T-mobile hotspot.
What are the late fees?
Chromebooks and hotspots each carry a $3/day late fee. You can review the user agreement (listed above) for more information. Service to these devices will be frozen/disabled if they are not returned.
What if the device is lost, stolen, or damaged?
When signing the user agreement, borrowers accept full financial responsibility for these devices. Replacement fees are as follows: Chromebooks: $500, hotspots: $75, accessories(case, charger, mouse): $45. Review the user agreement (listed above) for more information. Late, lost, or stolen devices will be frozen/disabled preventing them from being used.
