Media Relations:
The National City Police Department’s Public Information Officer is responsible for providing the public and the media with information.

We are committed to providing the highest level of service and public safety for our community. This commitment is achieved by using a variety law enforcement methods – to include enforcing laws, and through the use of problem solving and community oriented policing strategies. Although our entire agency is held to this mark of excellence, the Community Service Unit is tasked with providing a variety of services to our community that informs and educates everyone on crime prevention and community safety.

Throughout each year, our Community Services Unit partners with the National School District, local businesses and organizations, and service clubs to host and participate in more than a dozen events designed to benefit children and community members who may need help.

School Resource Officers

The National City Police Department School Resource Officer Program consists of a team of sworn police officers who respond to concerns related to school safety in the National and Sweetwater High School Districts. These tenured police officers have undergone an internal selection process prior to serving in this temporary, specialty assignment. Once assigned to the School Resource Officer (SRO) Unit, these SRO’s attend advanced, assignment-related officer training courses so they are better equipped to handle the unique demands of their position.

NCPD School Resource Officers collaborate and interact with school officials and students at each campus throughout the year to assist with maintaining a healthy and safe learning environment for everyone. Our SRO’s perform several functions, to include investigating crimes, enforcing laws, addressing attendance and truancy issues, and by responding to requests made from school officials and the concerns from student family members.

National City Animal Regulations

The National City Animal Regulations Program was designed to provide excellent animal regulations services to the citizens of National City. The purpose of the program is to enforce state statutes and city animal control ordinances, regulate animal care and welfare, investigate citizen complaints related to animal neglect or nuisance, and respond to loose, injured, or dead animals on public property and roadways.

Rabies:

The Rabies Control Program was designed to ensure all animal bites and human exposures to rabies can be properly investigated. It also provides low-cost rabies vaccinations, and processes licenses for dogs.

Shelter Operations:

The National City Police Department partners with the Chula Vista Animal Care and Control to house and care for stray, unwanted, or displaced animals from National City. Our Animal Regulations Officers make every effort to ensure healthy, adoptable animals receive the best care before they are brought to a shelter to be placed into a new, permanent, loving home. Shelter operations also coordinates foster home and volunteer programs, educates the community on pet over-population, and assists individuals who have lost or found a pet.

Homeless Outreach Team

The Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) partners with available social service agencies to help community members experiencing homelessness in National City. The Homeless Outreach Team provides an alternative solution to those who are in need and are willing to participate in social service help.

PERT

The San Diego County PERT teams are comprised of specially trained police officers or deputies who are paired with mental health professionals. Together, they respond on-scene to situations involving people with mental illness. The goal of the program is to refer people with mental illness who come into contact with police to the most appropriate service available and in the least restrictive environment possible. The 21 PERT teams represent a partnership between San Diego County Police and Sheriff departments and all of their divisions and San Diego County Mental Health, in addition to PERT, Inc, a non-profit organization.

Participating officers, deputies, and mental health professionals are specially selected and complete an initial introductory four hour training session prior to beginning with PERT and then complete a 40-hour block of training. The training includes modules about on-scene assessment, emergency response, mental illness, community-based organizations and the programs and services available throughout San Diego, and other topics related to mental health, substance abuse, homelessness and crisis response. In addition to this initial training, PERT, Inc. provides ongoing mental health training for law enforcement.

Reserve Police Officer Program

National City Police Reserves are people from the community who volunteer their time working as Reserve Police Officers. Most Reserve Officers have full time jobs, own small businesses, are students, or are in the military.

Reserve Officers have full police officer powers while on-duty. Our Reserve Officers supplement the patrol division as a solo or second officer in the field. Most Reserve Officers work patrol, learning the same techniques and skills as full time officers. Some Reserve Officers also work in the Investigations Division while others have collateral duties serving on the Department’s SWAT Team and Color Guard. Reserve Officers also work special events; such as parades, community events, mutual aid, search and rescue, and crime scene preservation.

The National City Police Department is always looking for talented men and women who have a desire to serve their community to join our Reserve Police Officer program. As a National City Police Reserve Officer, you will learn the basics of Law Enforcement from the ground up. Everyday will offer new learning experiences as you develop and sharpen the skills necessary to be an effective member of our patrol division. Reserve Officers who qualify are eligible to receive up to $300.00 per month for uniform reimbursement expenses.

How to become a National City Police Reserve Officer

The completion of a California POST approved Basic Academy is required. The Academy may take up to one year to complete. Interested applicants may submit an application with the National City Police Department once they have completed at least half of their Academy training. Applicants are then invited to participate in an interview. The police department will complete a thorough background investigation on the applicants who successfully complete the interview. The background investigation includes (but is not limited to) a check of financial records, criminal records, driving records, reference check and employment history. In addition, applicants will be required to pass a medical and psychiatric examination and truth verification test.
