What is the Community Memory Lab?

The Community Memory Lab at the National City Public Library is a space where library patrons can digitize audio/visual media formats such as VHS and audio cassette tapes, as well as scan documents, family photographs, slides, records, floppy disks, and even film negatives! Library staff will be available to assist patrons with using a variety of state-of-the-art digitization equipment, and instructions explaining how to prepare and digitize materials are available on the library website, as well as in the lab. Our mission is to provide patrons with the tools needed for the long-term preservation of their digital projects so that they and their families can enjoy their memories for many years to come.

How does it work?

The Community Memory Lab offers two separate transfer stations, each with a computer and access to our scanners and printers. Digitizing equipment is kept on a mobile cart that can be set up at either station. You can book a session using our online reservation form. Simply click the link below, fill out the required information, and select the appropriate amount of time you need. Please note that most transfers will happen in real time. Patrons are also welcome to use our Microfilm reader and to utilize our free Ancestry.com library edition to assist them with genealogy research.

Once those steps are complete, you are ready to use the Memory Lab!

What should I do to prepare for my appointment?

Be sure to plan enough time to digitize your memories! For photographs, slides, negatives, and documents it takes 2 minutes to digitize 1 item. VHS tapes, records, and film take the running time of the item to digitize. You can book an appointment in the Memory Lab for up to 4 hours, so plan your time accordingly.

Be sure to bring an external hard drive or USB drive with you to the Memory Lab so you can save your digitized memories. Bring an external hard drive with at least 8GB of memory, a USB drive, or have a Cloud account that you can sign in to. The library does NOT have USB drives or external hard drives.

Locate everything you want to save, including photo albums, file folders, slides, CDs of photographs, and more. Organize and prioritize your files in a way that makes sense to you, and check everything for mold or damage.

Here is a useful guide to help you prepare your items: Memory Lab Prep Guide

Listed below are the types of items you can digitize, along with guides, videos, tutorials and other resources that demonstrate how to digitize each type of item. If you have further questions or need assistance, please contact staff members at the Memory Lab at 619-470-5870 or email us at localhistory@nationalcityca.gov. We look forward to assisting you!
