On Monday, February 19, 2024, President Joseph R. Biden Jr., granted a Major Disaster Declaration for the State of California triggering the release of Federal funds to help people recover from a Severe Storm and Flooding that occurred January 21-23, 2024.

Big shout-out to our city staff, residents, and other volunteers who have diligently worked on the recovery efforts from the storm that took place on Jan. 22.  

✅Over 3,000 sandbags were provided

✅ City parks remain open until further notice.

✅ The Emergency Services recovery webpage is continually updated with new information for people cleaning up homes. Direct users to AlertSanDiego.org and click on the Recovery tab for help.

✅ The storm shelter set up for flood victims in the wake of the Jan. 22 storm has moved. The new location is at the City of San Diego Municipal Gym at Balboa Park. The gym is located at 2111 Pan American Plaza, San Diego, CA 92101. The phone number is (619) 525-8262. Services include a place for displaced people to stay, meals, snacks, crisis counseling, help replacing medication, and pet support from the San Diego Humane Society.

✅ To report fallen trees, debris, or clogged storm drain inlets, please contact Engineering and Public Works at (619) 336-4380 or (619) 336-4580. Monday – Thursday from 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Please contact the Non-Emergency line at (619) 336-4411 (Press 0) for after-hours.

Per County of San Diego Emergency Services, via Alert San Diego, Please DO NOT put debris near the curb where it can wash away in the rain, cause a hazard and/or health risks, and create blockages in the storm drain system. This includes furniture, trash, tree branches, green waste, and bulky items damaged from prior storms. To request bulky items pickup, please contact EDCO at Contact Us - EDCO National City  or (619) 287-7555.

• Report non-emergency problems, including but not limited to blocked storm drains, potholes, and broken street lights, via the National City Connect app.
• Sign up for Alert San Diego notifications for all your telephone numbers.
• Create a family communication plan to stay in touch with loved ones.
•  Prepare your pets. Have transportation ready for all larger animals under your responsibility.
• If needed, sandbags are available the National City Public Library for National City Residents only. BAGS ONLY AT THIS TIME. 
•  Prepare your home for an emergency.
• Visit the FEMA Flood Map Service Center to find your official flood map, access a range of other flood hazard products, and take advantage of tools for better understanding flood risks.
• Know the safest routes to and from home should flooding occur.
• Prepare your small business for an emergency.
• When placing your trash, yard, and recycle bins out on the street for collection, place each bin approximately two to three feet away from the curb so they do not impede the stormwater flowing on the street.
•  Sweep up trash, sediment, and debris, and dispose of construction waste in the trash to avoid having these items enter and block the stormwater collection system.

• For life-threatening emergencies, call 9-1-1.
• Report downed electrical lines or gas emergencies to San Diego Gas & Electric at 800-411-7343.
• Leave early if your property is in a flood zone. Water levels can rise fast once storms start. Do not hesitate to move if you see rising water.
•  Follow all instructions issued by public safety personnel.
• Drive carefully! Take your time getting home or to work.
• Slow down and do not drive through standing water.

Contact your property insurance carrier to report damages to your property and learn how to file a claim with the City for flood damage.

• Large animal shelter locations:  Identified on the maps when available.

In the event of a power outage, SDG&E will post power outages on its webpage, and crews will be working to restore power. Please note outages may be prolonged during the storm, and power may take longer than usual to restore power. If you see downed power lines, please stay away and call 9-1-1 to report it.
