A Loss for Our City

National City said goodbye to former Mayor George Waters earlier this month. Mr. Waters served National City as an elected official for 28 years, both on the City Council (12 years) and as Mayor (16 years).

Mr. Waters lived in National City for nearly 50 years after retiring from the Navy in 1965 as a Senior Chief. Many may remember his jewelry store and/or his consolidated office machine shop on Highland Avenue across from Café La Maze. Others may remember Mr. Waters favorite terms of endearments he used when greeting residents; “Hi There old buddy”, “Good morning most humble taxpayer”.

Mr. Waters was described by City Clerk Michael Dalla as a man who truly loved National City and was extremely proud to be Mayor and took the job seriously. Mr. Waters son Jim, said his father had an inexhaustible amount of energy when it came to promoting National City.

City Clerk Michael Dalla had the honor of eulogizing Mr. Waters at his funeral mass on Monday, February 9th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in National City. Below is an excerpt:
Safe to say that George Waters did himself and his parents proud. From humble beginnings, orphaned as a child during the Depression he went on to achieve all that he vowed to achieve as a child- distinguished Naval career, successful businessman, devoted husband and father, community leader and elected official respected by all.

George would no doubt be pleased with the outpouring of support demonstrated by your presence here today. The fact that we such a diverse show of support from current and past elected officials, business leaders, city employees and the most humble taxpayers is testimony to George’s ability to touch everyone is his own special way. His spark, his energy, his enthusiasm. He left his indelible mark on the City.

Copper Theft Watch

Within the past year there have been a rash of copper thefts throughout the county and nationwide. These thefts are due to the rising value of recycled copper and brass. The most common items that have been stolen are the water backflow valves that are on most residential and commercial properties. These valves are usually located on the back of the building making them an easy target for criminals.

Recently there has also been a series of thefts related to the emergency auto sprinkler connections and associated parts that are mounted on many of the buildings here in National City.

One proven way to reduce the possibility of these types of thefts is to devalue the targeted item. A painted piece of copper or brass is worth less at a recycle center because it has to be paint free prior to it being melted down. Although paint is a good deterrent, a better alternative is the use of a commonly sold product that is designed to coat and protect the bed of pickup trucks. The best way to apply these products is to spray directly on the valve or copper part while it is installed and functional. Spray the outside of the valve liberally with the product. Once the valve has been liberally coated turn the valve on and off several times to ensure that the on-off function works. If you apply this product to a valve prior to installation, be sure to cover the open ends of the valve so none of the coating gets inside. These spray on products are commonly available at most home improvement stores and range in price from five dollars to twenty dollars per can.

To report a copper theft or any crime, please contact the National City Police Department at 619-336-4411 and press ‘0’.

Employee of the Quarter: Firefighter Chris Duron

Firefighter Duron has displayed outstanding job performance and a tireless dedication to duty throughout his employment with the National City Fire Department. On a daily basis Chris is the definition of a dedicated worker. He arrives early and always has a positive “can-do” attitude. As a newer member of the department Firefighter Duron has worked diligently to improve his job knowledge by attending multiple outside training courses and consistently displaying an overall commitment to constant improvement.

Firefighter Duron has also displayed effective leadership at the department by volunteering to be a mentor for our newly hired firefighters. He has imparted his discipline and dedication on these new members and has greatly contributed to their successful completion of their probation.

Recently Firefighter Duron has gone above and beyond in two specific areas. Chris, along with fellow Firefighters, spearheaded the National City Firefighter’s Tower of Terror Halloween community event. This event was a tremendous success and provided over 2,700 residents of our community with a safe and fun Halloween experience. His management of the haunted house design along with his willingness to put in long hours ensured the tower was ready days prior to the event. On the night of the event his leadership helped make this the smoothest running Tower of Terror to date. Additionally, Firefighter Duron has recently taken the lead on the National City Fire Department Pre-Fire planning project. This project is designed to give responding crews vital information to an occupancy while enroute to an emergency. Chris has coordinated with San Diego Fire Regional Communications Center to update and upload over 75 pre-fire plans into the computer aided dispatch system. He has also identified key occupancy hazards and began data collection to provide future pre-plan development. His dedication will greatly enhance operations utilizing improved technology to provide up to date and relevant information.

Firefighter Chris Duron is the example of an exemplary employee. His commitment to serve the residents of National City and his dedication to our Fire Department make him an excellent choice for National City’s Employee of the Quarter.

City Engineering Department Offers Flood Prevention Tips

  • Keep your landscaping clean and free from leaves, trash, pebbles, bark, rocks, etc. that can be easily moved by rainwater into our inlets and storm drains which could cause backup and flooding.

  • Keep trash and debris out of street gutters. Loose materials can clog storm drains and increase the potential for flooding throughout your neighborhood.

  • Inspect and clear rain gutters on your property to keep them from overflowing.

  • If you live in an area that has experienced flooding in the past, be sure that important items like keepsakes, tools and equipment are stored off the floor.

  • Once rain begins, avoid low lying roadways and find alternate routes prone to temporary flooding.

  • Stay safe. Use caution and slow down on roads and freeways. Be aware of road conditions and avoid driving through standing or moving water.

  • Be prepared. Use sandbags to prevent rain from entering unwanted areas.

National City Library Showcases Latest Solar Technology

The SDSU Sage project and SDSU’s MEMS Laboratory has partnered with the National City Library in order to help engage and teach the public about new greener ways of harvesting and utilizing sustainable energy. One of the projects main goals is to demonstrate emerging Energy Technologies to the local communities around San Diego. Public education of new green energy technologies can help bring awareness to alternative ways in reducing harmful CO2 emissions to the environment.

The technologies being presented at the National City Library are photovoltaic that are thin and light enough to be printed onto a flexible substrate. One new solar panel technology on display has been developed by the company Solarmer, this organic solar panel is also transparent, allowing them to be mounted on windows and still allow light to enter. Enerplex is another company showcased at the National City library. This company utilizes thin film silicon photovoltaic technology to harvest solar energy.
