Days are getting longer and things are heating up all over National City. It's time to start thinking about hitting the pool, strolling along the newly beautified 8th Street, or taking in a movie in the park. Whatever you do, take a moment to relax and read below. On April 18, 2017, the City Council voted unanimously to appoint Angil Morris-Jones as the City’s new City Attorney. Ms. Morris-Jones was selected by the City Council after a state-wide search lead by an executive search firm. The position has been vacant since October, 2016 when former City Attorney Claudia Silva accepted a position as Assistant County Council with the County of San Diego. Ms. Morris-Jones began work on May 1st.
In accepting the position Ms. Morris-Jones stated “I count it an honor and a privilege to have been selected by the National City Council as the City Attorney. I am excited about the opportunity to serve as legal counsel and look forward to being involved in making a positive difference for the people of National City.” She will be coming to National City from Yuba County in Central California where she currently serves as County Counsel. Prior to Yuba County, Ms. Morris-Jones served in the County Counsel Offices for the counties of El Dorado, Fresno and Merced. She also served as City Attorney in Palmdale and Turlock. Ms. Morris-Jones earned her Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University School of Law in Los Angeles, California.

We are excited to share that Amazon has moved to National City and is hiring over 200 part time-seasonal employees! The new Amazon Delivery Station is expected to begin operations later this Summer.
National City’s Downtown Corridor is “blooming” with new flower baskets and fresh murals! The flower baskets will be installed as part of a pilot program to beautify 8th Street. With the help of Housing and Economic Development and Streets Division twenty four baskets will be hung from D Avenue to National City Boulevard . As part of the City’s continued effort to provide sustainable and cost-effective design to National City, the new flower baskets feature artificial azaleas that will require minimal maintenance. The UV protected faux flowers will last for years and bring bright beautiful color to the streets.
You may have noticed that the former H&M Goodies Family Auction house recently received a temporary mural makeover. Last month hundreds of volunteers came out during the weekend of March 31st to wrap the building in fresh bright murals that reflect the history, diversity and creativity of National City. More than 40% of the art was created on temporary panels that could easily be installed, removed and relocated throughout the City once the building is sold for re-development. All of the art work was created by local artists from A Reason To Survive and the National City community. Funding for the project was provided by the National City Tourism Marketing District.
The National City Chamber of Commerce invites you to participate in the $5,000 Elevate My Business Challenge. This 60 Day program is conducted through (4) four onsite engaging and interactive sessions, with follow-up hands-on assignments designed to guide the micro-small business entrepreneur through the journey of growing into a larger, sustainable, profitable, employer-based small business. The program will culminate with a pitch completion with ideally 10 finalist, where a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winner are selected based upon feedback from a distinguished panel of judges. These top winners will earn cash prizes of 1st, $2,500; 2nd $1,250; and 3rd $750. The selected winners will be participating at the next Founders Business Growth Boot camp. May is water and boating safety month so come enjoy an afternoon of free fishing, kayaking, rowing, and other water and land based activities for the whole family. All equipment to participate in the activities will be provided for FREE during the event. There will also be opportunity drawings and chances to tour the new National City Aquatic Center to see the fun summer activities that will be offered. Congratulations to our canine teams for their exceptional showing in Oceanside’s 1st Annual Police Canine Trials on Saturday, April 21st. National City Police Officer Raziel Quiroga and “Marko” won the “Top Dog” Award (pictured here) and Officer Joe Camacho and “Duke” took first place in officer protection and third place in obedience.
To be recognized amongst 43 canine teams shows the expertise and incredible bond Officer Quiroga and Officer Camacho have with their canines.

4th Annual Community Service Day was a complete success! This annual event took place in El Toyon Park this year on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. With over 280 volunteers, from the following organizations: The Church of Christ, A Reason to Survive, Sweetwater High School, El Toyon Elementary School, Rancho De La Nacion School, Wyndham Hotels, Granger Junior High School, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and Starbucks. The majority of volunteers were National City residents but we also had volunteers from San Diego, Chula Vista, and Bonita. Volunteers transformed the park in 6 hours through the following projects: a mural, and installation of dog park agility items at the El Toyon Dog Park; trash pickup and weeding; artwork that was hung along fencing, a functional mural at the tennis courts; and the painting of asphalt children games, including a United States map, hop scotch, four square, and a track. Volunteers enjoyed a BBQ lunch hosted by the National City Fire Department.
