There is no other season quite like it and there is no other community that embraces it quite like National City. It's the holiday season and National City is stepping up once again. Can you believe there is ice skating in Kimball Park? This is the 2016 Holiday Edition of Your National City News, so grab an eggnog latte or whatever your favorite holiday libation is and sit back for some National City News.
Join the City of National City and the National City Chamber of Commerce as we present the 9th Annual “A Kimball Christmas and Holiday Celebration”. The event will take place in Kimball Park beginning on Thursday, December 15th through Sunday, December 18th. The four night event is free and open to the public.
Thursday night is the kick off to “A Kimball Christmas and Holiday Celebration” with ice skating, children’s craft activities, live dance and musical performances, delicious food and beverages for sale, and a not to be missed photo opportunity with Santa! Everyone in attendance will countdown for the annual tree lighting at 6:15 p.m. Another special guest will make an appearance for pictures from 5:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m. Children are encouraged to participate in the bike rodeo to learn about bike safety and will have the opportunity to enter a free raffle to win a bike and helmet, courtesy of the National City Police Department and Rady Children’s Hospital Safe Routes to School program. The FREE Ice Skating Rink will continue until 10 p.m. We’re excited to announce the San Diego Gulls will be in attendance and Disney on Ice will be handing out complimentary show tickets, while supplies last.
It’s the season of giving; please bring a canned/non-perishable food item to the four day celebration, all food items will be donated to the National City Food Bank and help our local families in need.
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the FREE Ice Skating Rink will be open from 4 p.m.–10 p.m. Come and enjoy music, face painting, and food and beverages for sale. The FREE Ice Skating Rink is made possible by the National City Chamber of Commerce, the National City Tourism Marketing District, The City of National City, Disney on Ice, and San Diego Gulls.
The FREE Ice Skating Rink will be on the basketball court in Kimball Park; the south side of the park near 16th St.

City Hall will be closed for two weeks beginning December 21, 2016 thru January 3, 2017 as a cost savings measure. Estimated salary savings will be $138,820 in addition the City will realize approximately $12,000 in energy savings.
During this time essential emergency personnel from the Police and Fire Department will remain in operation to include animal control, graffiti abatement, and parking enforcement. The City will have standby and on-call personnel from Public Works, Fire Investigations, and executives and managers from each department.
During the two week closure the Senior Nutrition Center dining room and home-delivered meals will not be affected. Park maintenance will continue. The City Hall Finance Department drop box will be available to make payments. Library materials will not be due during this time and fines will not accrue.
This will be the eighth year of the closure. “The two week closure represents the partnership between the City and its employees. The program results in cost savings to the city while allowing employees to have quality family time during the holidays”, said City Manager Leslie Deese. The two week period crossing December and January was selected because it is historically a slow business period. Representatives from all departments will be available to address emergencies.

Engineer Paul Kane has been with the National City Fire Department for 14 years and has proven to be very reliable both on the fire ground and in the fire house. Paul has extensive construction knowledge and participated in many community projects in National City including Habitat for Humanity, the Sanchez Family Home project, Christmas and July and many more. Paul even constructed a Vent-Enter-Isolate-Search (V.E.I.S) room in the drill tower, which has enhanced the training capabilities of the training tower located at Station #34 which has been used to train hundreds of Firefighters from all over the county.
He is an exemplary employee and an outstanding crew member. His commitment to providing the highest possible standard of care to the residents of National City is an asset to the department and the City. Thank you Paul for your continued commitment to National City!
During the month of “Walktober” the National City Safe Routes to School (NCSRTS) team hosted 10 walk to school days at all 10 elementary schools in National City; 1,300 students in total participated. NCSRTS partnered with the National City Police Department and gave away a total of 30 bikes to local students. During the events students learned about the importance of walking to school and how to be safe pedestrians.
The NCSRTS team would like to thank all the families that participated in “Walktober” as well the National School District, National City Police and Fire Departments, National City Chamber of Commerce and the multiple local businesses that continue to support the idea of “Keep Moving #NationalCity”
All 10 National City elementary schools were entered into the Safe Routes to School National Partnership “2016 Fire Up Your Feet” Fall Activity Challenge with the opportunity to receive a cash incentive for their school.
