National City 16 Weeks of STEAM
Monday, February 1, 2021 will be the launch date for the inaugural National City 16 Weeks of STEAM Initiative. STEAM is a hands-on approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as ways to guide student inquiry and critical thinking. This initiative offers family activities, lessons and virtual field trips focused on STEAM for students that can happen right at home. Each week will provide engaging investigations and opportunities for families to explore each of the four ecospheres- the Hydrosphere (water), Geosphere (land), Atmosphere (air) and the Biosphere (all living things) with special emphasis on conservation. This program is free and open to all families and information is geared to grade K-8. Digital badges and prizes will be awarded to residents of National City or children attending school in National City by the various partners of the Collective. To participate, go to the web site and subscribe and download the activities and lessons to begin completing the modules.
The activities and fun challenges will provide families with an awareness of our city’s natural resources and ways to preserve them for future generations. The activities are designed for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Many of the projects can also be completed with materials readily found in the home. Students and families will receive rewards and recognition for completing and submitting examples of their projects. The initiative will close on May 14, 2021. National City 16 Weeks of STEAM has the goal of launching annually and scaling efforts to also include students in high school in future years.
